Round and Round

Johnny arrived Friday afternoon (September 5) and welded the turntable rail to the brackets. By sundown, the turntable was rolling on its own rail. The rail required no shimming!

On Saturday, the crew was scattered throughout the Austin area getting important tasks accomplished.

Before lunch…

  • John T, Sophia, and Bob reconnected the tracks in Austin and filled in ties.
  • James and Johnny aligned and welded up the steel spans for the main turntable lead.
  • John O, Richard F, and Richard O built up the dirt ramp for the main turntable lead.
  • Ken and Stephen were making final adjustments to the lighting.
  • David was trimming yaupon in the steaming bay area and then helped Stephen with lighting alignment.

Lunch was prepared by Lori and Linda – a taco bar with black bean & corn side and fruit salad. It was finished with strawberry shortcake. Mmmmm.

After lunch…

  • John T and Sophia put in hardware cloth (block gophers), landscaping fabric (block weeds and dirt infiltration), and gravel (just looks good) in the turntable ring. Stephen misjudged the amount of hardware cloth on-hand and only half of the ring could be filled.
  • Ken, Stephen, and Richard F finished off the dirt ramp and Ken and Richard installed track panels.
  • James and Johnny completed the welding of the steel spans
  • John O, Stephen, and James built several final-height block piers for the steel spans.
